Terms and Copyright

  • Terms
The primary goal of MicroCommons is to facilitate sharing of scholarly content and foster an online research community of microartifact specialists, micromorphologists and scholars from around the world interested in these techniques. All contributions to MicroCommons are reviewed by the administrator before being posted.

We invite you to submit content to share, provided you agree to the following terms:

Participation in MicroCommons is at your own risk. You take responsibility for comments under your username and use the information provided here at your own risk.

Opinions and errors are your own. You understand that all content posted to MicroCommons is the sole responsibility of the individual who originally posted the content. You understand, also, that all opinions expressed by users of this site are expressed strictly in their individual capacities, and not as representatives of MicroCommons. You agree that MicroCommons will not be liable, under any circumstances and in any way, for any errors or omissions, loss or damage of any kind incurred as a result of use of any content posted on this site. You agree that you must evaluate and bear all risks associated with the use of any content, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such content.

Be respectful. Do not use obscene, racist, or sexually explicit language. Personal attacks are not permitted, nor are impersonations or aliases. MicroCommons reserves the right to refuse submissions that are abusive, hateful, or defame or insult anyone. MicroCommons also reserves the right to refuse submissions that are off-topic.

Solicitations, advertisements and political endorsements are not allowed. Posts of a commercial nature designed to promote a service or product will be deleted. You may link to other informational websites when relevant to the discussion. You may not use the MicroCommons name to endorse or promote any product, opinion, cause or political candidate. Representation of your personal opinions as institutionally endorsed by MicroCommons is strictly prohibited.

Visiting outside links. You acknowledge and agree that MicroCommons is not responsible for the availability of such external sites or resource, and does not endorse and is not responsible or liable for any content, advertising, products, or other materials on or available from such sites or resources.

Honor copyright laws. You may not post copyrighted material to MicroCommons unless you have express permission to do so or your use of the material is a fair use, fair dealing, or otherwise authorized by law. This includes but is not limited to text, photos, images, and screenshots.

Copyright complaints and Takedown Policy. MicroCommons respects your intellectual property and the intellectual property of others, and we require that our users do, as well. If you believe another person has copied your work and has made it accessible on this site in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, or has violated your intellectual property rights in some other way, please contact us. Material will be taken down on receipt of a request.

Parties who have questions or who wish to contest the use of specific works may contact the administrator of MicroCommons. Please include: (1) A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner (or of the agent who is authorized to act on behalf of the owner); (2) Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing or to be the subject of infringing activity and that is to be removed or access to which is to be disabled, and information reasonably sufficient to permit MicroCommons to locate the material. Providing URLs in your communication is the best way to help us locate content quickly.

  • Copyright
Instead of traditional copyright ("All Rights Reserved"), MicroCommons uses a suite of licensing options developed by Creative Commons ("Some Rights Reserved") to help promote the sharing of digital content while retaining author attribution (i.e. keeping your name associated with your work).

These types of licenses do not put your scholarship in the public domain. They allow you, as a contributor of MicroCommons, the power and flexibility to determine the distribution and application of your work. Creative Commons licenses are also non-exclusive, which means you can permit the general public to use your work and then enter into a separate and different non-exclusive license with someone else if you choose.

By default, all user-contributed content on MicroCommons carries a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license. If you would prefer a different license for your work or would like to retain traditional copyright, please specify your request when submitting content to MicroCommons or contact the administrator.

  • Obtaining Reuse Permissions
As the original creator of your work, you hold copyright and thus can determine how your work is viewed, shared, and reused. In the case of publications, however, the copyright of your published works often remains with the publisher. Seeking permission to post or share your publications in a public space such as this website is essential.

Most publishers will grant permission for posting of individual articles or book chapters by the author if formally requested via email or writing. Authors can also add a Scholar's Copyright Addendum (available from Science Commons) to a publisher's copyright agreement that clearly state the terms of reuse you are seeking. The document is signed by both you (the author) and the publisher ensuring there is no confusion concerning copyright should questions of infringement arise in the future.
